Before getting into the beauty of the oils, we must focus on “The fab three”. Essential fatty acids, “EFAs” aren’t called essential for nothing. The skin and the body need them in order to survive. The fab three are Linoleic Acid (LA, Omega-6 fats), Alpha-linolenic Acid (ALA, Omega 3 fats), and Gamma-linolenic Acid (GLA). EFAs increase the absorption of vitamins and minerals; nourish the skin, hair and nails; promote proper nerve functioning; help produce hormones; ensure normal growth and development; and prevent and treat disease.
Linoleic Acid (LA, Omega-6 fats) is a polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid and is one of the essential fatty acids for humans, who must obtain it through their diet. LA is found in flax seed, hemp seed, borage seed soybean, walnut, and dark green leaves. Alpha- Linolenic Acid (LNA, Omega 3 fats) found in many seeds and oils, including flaxseed, walnuts, chia, hemp, and many common vegetable oils Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA) is an omega-6 fatty acid. Omega-6 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids. They are necessary for human health and the body can make them if healthy. This is done by converting LA into GLA. You can also get them through food. Along with omega-3 fatty acids, omega-6 fatty acids play a crucial role in brain function, and normal growth and development. Also known as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), they help stimulate skin and hair growth, maintain bone health, regulate metabolism, and maintain the reproductive system. GLAs are found in several plant-based oils, including evening primrose oil (EPO) 9%, borage oil 24% GLA which has more than twice as much as EPO, and black currant seed 18%.
Blockers to convert LA into GLA: Healthy human cells transform linoleic acid into gamma-linolenic acid, but dietary deficiencies and disease conditions may block, slow down, or interfere with the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of the LA to GLA. They include:
- Excess cholesterol common in diets rich in meat, eggs, and dairy products
- Excess saturated and monounsaturated long-chain fatty acids which together make up for 90% of American diets
- Processed vegetable oils
- Heated oils
- Alcohol
- Diabetes
- High sugar consumption
A proper balance of these fatty acids is essential to good health. The daily intake recommendation of the Institute of Medicine is 4:1 – four times as many omega-6 fatty acids as omega-3 fatty acids. It is currently estimated that the average American diet maintains a ratio of up to 25:1.
Sources of essential fatty acids include fish, nuts, seeds, and green leafy vegetables as well as supplementation of borage, flax seed, evening primrose, and hemp seed oil (nature’s most perfectly balanced oil). It’s important to know that saturated fat’s bad rap as an artery-clogging precursor to heart disease and stroke does not apply to essential fatty acids (EFAs). This collection of “good” polyunsaturated fats are actually vital to body function.
Without EFAs, our bodies run out of the building blocks our cells require to maintain peak function.
Foods that offer the freshest delivery of these nutritive substances in the best proportions are flax, hemp seeds, borage, chia seeds, leafy green vegetables and wild, cold-water fish.

SkinDance Face Moisturizing Oil
A little known fact is that in the skin care industry manufacturers are rarely using food grade, unrefined oils. The main reason for this is cost and shelf life. The refining process removes the most healing vital part (5%) of the oil and thus gives it a longer shelf life. These are the EFAs that are being removed. EFAs benefit your skin in several ways, including:
• Managing oil production and hydration of your skin.
• Preventing hyperkeratinization of hair follicles, which appears as the little red bumps often seen on upper arms.
• Greatly reducing premature aging of your skin.
• Reducing the risk of acne
• Protects against sun damage
• Boosts hydration
Premium food grade organically grown, unrefined Evening Primrose Seed Oil, Borage Oil, Rose Hip Seed Oil, Black Currant Seed Oil, Hemp Seed Oil and Moringa Seed Oil are what makes SkinDance, Starflower’s stellar product and a best seller so sought after.
Evening Primrose oil (EPO) contains 72% linoleic acid, the essential fatty acid that is abundant in commercial seed oils (safflower, sunflower, corn, grape, sesame. Evening primrose also contains 9% gamma-linolenic acid which is present in only a few other plant seeds. Evening primrose oil has many healing benefits due to its gamma-linolenic acid content. Topically it helps acne by reducing skin inflammation. It is derived from the yellow wildflower, Oenothera biennis.
Borage Oil contains up to 24% GLA, more than twice as much as evening primrose. It contains about 34% LA, and the rest is saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids. Borage oil is derived from the seed of the plant Borago officinalis, also known as starflower. As a beneficial fat, the GLA in borage oil also helps move fat-soluble vitamins through the bloodstream, reducing fat cravings, curbing overeating, and reducing overall fat accumulation. Many skin conditions are inflammatory-based, and borage oil’s anti-inflammatory nature makes it a good choice for treating dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, acne, and the subsequent scarring.
Black currant seed oil contains both EFAs and up to 18% GLA.
SkinDance is Starflower’s most essential moisturizer to assure a smooth texture, and minimal wrinkles.
